FROM PERSPECTIVES: BIOGEOGRAPHY SAMPLE

Ecological assessment of the diversity and abundance of marine invertebrates from nine different locations in the Bay have been determined in this study. An example of a portion of this analysis is shown below for Shelter Island.

The biology survey plots were on two main sections of Shelter Island. The island itself is a man made island designed to harbor boats in its many marinas. One of our survey sites was the inside shoreline of one of these marinas while the other was on a beach that is exposed to the bay.

On the bay side of the island where we conducted our survey is a large expanse of shallow beach that is exposed during low tides. The area labeled “Uncovered Beach” nearly tripled the size of the survey beach when the tides reached the -1ft mark for the day. This is the only place in the immediate area where a large expanse of sediment has built up due to the fact that the shoreline marker for the rest of the island indicates artificial rock walls.
